In the current industrial context, characterized by increasingly demanding markets, manufacturing industries are driven to improve efficiency and effectiveness of production systems. The shift in technological adoption brought by Industry 4.0 and Digital Manufacturing has led to the necessity to manage a great amount and typologies of data coming from assets. Modern Industrial Asset Management practices are nowadays oriented towards value creation across the value chain and the whole asset lifecycle, in which data needs to be collected, managed and shared. For these reasons, the use of digital technologies like Digital Twins and Digital Platforms can be considered to be a game changer for effective Asset Lifecycle Management practices and informed decisional processes. To assess the role of Digital Twins and Digital Platforms in Industrial Asset Lifecycle Management, a systematic literature review has been conducted, aiming to analyze the contributions of these technologies. Following the analysis of the outcome of the review, consisting of 66 papers, it was possible to address the opportunities, benefits and improvements brought by those technologies during the asset lifecycle of manufacturing assets. First of all, a paper categorization analysis has been performed, highlighting several perspectives on the nature of publications. Secondly, an analysis of the publications’ content has been provided. The analysis focuses on the three lifecycle phases of asset life (Beginning of Life, Middle of Life and End of Life), showing the literature contribution in those phases, analyzing state-of-the art solutions and assessing literature gaps. In general, the review process highlighted the different benefits and services enabled by those technologies throughout the lifecycle pertaining to different practices (asset design and configuration, asset and process monitoring, maintenance, decommissioning, …) but also highlighted how for both Digital Twins and Digital Platforms a through-life perspective is often missing or hard to achieve. Lastly, a discussion of benefits and general considerations is presented, indicating the current strengths and potentialities, or where future research might head.
