In the translation to digital archives move from static repositories to living systems: dynamic environments in which the algorithm acts as a relational agent, activating trajectories and new interpretations. Of this, generous platforms are the most obvious expression: interfaces capable of visualizing the micro-narratives that inhabit each archive, transforming it into a reorganizable space. Among the modes of navigation, cartography emerges as an indical tool useful for locating artifacts: a form in which it struggles to restore atmospheres and cultural stratifications. This gives rise to a paradigm shift: no longer thinking about how the territory can act as a platform for exploring archives, but rather how the archive can become a guide for reading the territory. In this inversion of perspective, the archive becomes an interpretive structure – not an object, but a tool for looking – while the territory manifests itself in its being a blind map: an emerging surface that acquires meaning every time it is crossed and communicated. This thesis focuses on graphic design archives, recognizing them as a significant part of territorial identity. Spatializing these memories is equivalent to highlighting their cultural value and activating the implicit maps (Baule 2005) in the archive. The communication of new territorial layouts - alternating known plots and less visible routes - then allows memory and landscape to be put back into circulation, avoiding the automatism of the known itinerary and cultivating the unexpected, through tensions and intersections capable of restoring depth to place. It is on this basis that the Observatory of Extended Devices for Territorial Communication through Archives came into being: a methodological tool that brings together visual models, navigation strategies and design tools. The concept of extension (Baule, 2012) is understood here as the transformation of communicative devices in the translation to digital, capable of integrating multimodal logics, multimedia fruition and contributions of artificial intelligence, employed in both curating and generating new media.
Nella traduzione al digitale gli archivi passano da repository statici a sistemi viventi, ovvero ambienti dinamici in cui l’algoritmo agisce come agente relazionale, attivando traiettorie e nuove interpretazioni. Di questo le piattaforme generose ne sono l’espressione più evidente: interfacce capaci di visibilizzare le micro-narrazioni che abitano ogni archivio, trasformandolo in uno spazio riorganizzabile. Tra le modalità di navigazione, la cartografia emerge come strumento indicale utile a localizzare artefatti: una forma in cui essa fatica a restituire atmosfere e stratificazioni culturali. Da qui nasce un cambio di paradigma: non più pensare a come il territorio possa agire da piattaforma per esplorare gli archivi, quanto più come l’archivio possa farsi guida per rileggere il territorio. In questa inversione di prospettiva, l’archivio diventa struttura interpretativa – non oggetto, ma strumento di sguardo – mentre il territorio si manifesta nel suo essere carta muta: superficie emergente che acquista senso ogni volta che viene attraversata e comunicata. La tesi si concentra sugli archivi del progetto grafico, riconoscendoli come parte significativa dell’identità territoriale. Spazializzare queste memorie progettuali equivale a evidenziarne il valore culturale e ad attivare le mappe implicite (Baule 2005) nell’archivio. La comunicazione di nuovi layout territoriali – alternando trame note e percorsi meno visibili – consente allora di rimettere in circolo la memoria e il paesaggio, evitando l’automatismo dell’itinerario noto e coltivando l’inaspettato, attraverso tensioni e incroci capaci di restituire profondità al luogo. Su queste basi nasce l’Osservatorio dei Dispositivi Estesi per la Comunicazione del Territorio Attraverso gli Archivi: uno strumento metodologico che raccoglie modelli visivi, strategie di navigazione e strumenti progettuali. Il concetto di estensione (Baule 2012) è qui inteso come trasformazione dei dispositivi comunicativi nella traduzione al digitale, capace di integrare logiche multimodali, fruizione multimediale e contributi dell’intelligenza artificiale, impiegata sia nella curatela che nella generazione di media.
