The purpose of the adaptive reuse of old buildings has to be beyond sustainability and energy efficiency; it must also engage with the needs of the surrounding community. Architecture in certain contexts fosters a sense of comfort, and when old buildings have new functions, their embedded collective memories can transformed into properties for public well-being. Among the various new functions, museums have become one of the most common functions for reused buildings. This thesis will explore how adaptive reuse as a museum can impact the community and how such transformations reflect the collective memory and spatial continuity. Based on the investigations on adaptive reuse, sense of comfort and museology, the design phase proposes a museum and multifunctional space with a historically important building: Ankara Beer Factory Bathhouse Designed in 1937 by Ernst Egli -one of the influential architects of early Republican Ankara of the 1930s- the Bathhouse holds architectural and cultural value, mostly due to its location within Atatürk Forest Farm (Atatürk Orman Çiftliği). Even though the building was abandoned in the 1960s and lost its visibility together with Atatürk Forest Farm, its architectural, cultural and historical significance remains intact. As it is one of the few remaining works of Egli in Ankara, the Bathhouse could serve as a critical case study for further investigation on how design can respond to collective memory and historical identity. The thesis includes research on adaptive reuse and its psychological and social implications, with a particular emphasis on museology as a framework for interpreting adaptive reuse practice. The extended research on the history of the city and the site on a bigger scale and the development of architecture will depict the historical, cultural and architectural value of the site, whereas a particular framework on adaptive reuse and museology will explore how exhibition spaces can contribute to the revitalization of abandoned areas. The design project aims to re-introduce the Bathhouse as a contemporary public space, where it will reflect the memory, identity, and social encounters in the community and the site.

Abstract
The design project aims to re-introduce the Bathhouse as a contemporary public space, where it will reflect the memory, identity, and social encounters in the community and the site.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
