The dialectics of Milan's heritage interiors: exploring the architectural and experiential dichotomy in milanese house museums and foundation spaces

This thesis explores the visitor experience within house museums and foundations in Milan, aiming to investigate how architectural, curatorial, and interpretive elements shape perceptions and engagement. Rooted in a personal passion for museums and exhibition spaces, the research is framed through the dual lens of architectural sensibility and cultural heritage interpretation. Milan’s house museums and foundations—rich in historical, artistic, and familial narratives—serve as the focal points for this investigation. Ten selected institutions were analyzed through direct observation, site visits, and in-depth interviews with visitors, museum guides, curators, and directors. The study is structured into two principal sections: A Historical Perspective, which examines the evolution of these spaces through family legacies, architectural transformations, and the impact of wars and renovations; and B Visitor Experience, which delves into five key dimensions—interpretive tools and signage, curatorial strategies, spatial design, emotional and intellectual engagement, and the sense of intimacy and personal connection fostered by these environments. By comparing and contrasting the unique characteristics of each museum, the thesis identifies recurring patterns and unique approaches that influence visitor interpretation and connection. The findings highlight the critical role of spatial storytelling, architectural atmosphere, and curatorial coherence in crafting meaningful and memorable museum experiences. Ultimately, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of how historic domestic spaces are transformed into dynamic sites of public engagement and cultural memory.

Questa tesi esplora l’esperienza del visitatore all'interno delle case museo e fondazioni di Milano, con l’obiettivo di indagare come gli elementi architettonici, curatoriali e interpretativi influenzino la percezione e il coinvolgimento del pubblico. Radicata in una passione personale per i musei e gli spazi espositivi, la ricerca è sviluppata attraverso una duplice prospettiva: la sensibilità architettonica e l’interpretazione del patrimonio culturale. Le case museo e le fondazioni milanesi ricche di narrazioni storiche, artistiche e familiari costituiscono il fulcro dell’indagine. Dieci istituzioni selezionate sono state analizzate attraverso osservazioni dirette, visite in loco e interviste approfondite con visitatori, guide museali, curatori e direttori. Lo studio è articolato in due sezioni principali: *Una prospettiva storica*, che esamina l’evoluzione di questi spazi attraverso le eredità familiari, le trasformazioni architettoniche e l’impatto di guerre e restauri; e *L’esperienza del visitatore*, che approfondisce cinque dimensioni chiave: strumenti interpretativi e segnaletica, strategie curatoriali, progettazione spaziale, coinvolgimento emotivo e intellettuale, e senso di intimità e connessione personale favorito da questi ambienti. Confrontando e mettendo a paragone le caratteristiche peculiari di ciascun museo, la tesi individua schemi ricorrenti e approcci distintivi che influenzano l’interpretazione e il legame del visitatore. I risultati evidenziano il ruolo fondamentale del racconto spaziale, dell’atmosfera architettonica e della coerenza curatoriale nella creazione di esperienze museali significative e memorabili. In definitiva, lo studio contribuisce a una comprensione più profonda di come gli spazi domestici storici vengano trasformati in luoghi dinamici di coinvolgimento pubblico e memoria culturale.
