Between utopia and rust: a post-industrial vision for the gas factory of Ostiense, Rome

At the heart of Rome’s Ostiense district, the Gasometro rises as a 90-meter iron monument—a poignant reminder of this transformative era. Once a bustling hub of energy and industry, it now faces the challenge of revitalization amid neglect and environmental decay. The project "Between Utopia and Rust" embraces this moment as an opportunity to reimagine the Gasometro area as a vibrant public space that honors its industrial past while nurturing ecological health and fostering community connections. Rather than treating the industrial remnants as mere relics, the vision transforms the site into a flourishing park that connects Rome’s southern edge with the Tiber River, creating a sanctuary for biodiversity and a catalyst for social engagement. Abandoned industrial sites have turned Ostiense into a place to pass through rather than a destination to stay. This project seeks to change that narrative by crafting a space where people can pause, connect, and immerse themselves in their surroundings. The preserved industrial elements become narrative threads, weaving the past and present together and inviting visitors to reflect on the journey from industry to renewal. By converting neglected industrial land into dynamic parks and cultural venues, the project encourages community participation in fostering a resilient and inclusive ecosystem. Tra queste, il periodo industriale del XIX e XX secolo si distingue, lasciando segni duraturi di speranza e progresso, anche se gradualmente si allontana dalla vista. Nel cuore del quartiere Ostiense di Roma, il Gasometro si erge come un monumento di ferro alto 90 metri — un toccante ricordo di questa era di trasformazione. Un tempo fulcro pulsante di energia e industria, oggi affronta la sfida della rivitalizzazione tra incuria e degrado ambientale.
