Viollet Le-Duc and restoration in Carcassonne Restoration can be a highly controversial topic, and it is not easy to understand how to intervene on national historical heritage. Viollet-le-Duc was aware of this, and sought to understand the true spirit and character of the work through his cognitive method. This thesis analyses the figure of Viollet-le-Duc and his architectural thinking, which led him to become an architect who anticipated rationalism and the modern movement. He sought the truth of the work in order to best describe its true character, given by the unity and style unique to each monument. Viollet-le-Duc was as much a positivist as he was a romantic, his figure as complex as it was interesting, and he disagreed with the approach to architecture of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. His interventions aimed to enhance monuments, which communicated their history to the people. Viollet-le-Duc wanted to complete the missing parts, elevating the building to a new stage of evolution and bringing it to a level of completeness never seen before. After describing and exploring the thinking and cultural context of the 19th century, I will go into more detail about the restoration in Carcassonne. This restoration is one of the most significant, as it gave Viollet-le-Duc the opportunity to apply his theories on architecture on a larger scale than a single building, expanding to an urban dimension. Carcassonne is an interesting city from a historical point of view because of its geographical position on the border between the Frankish and Visigothic kingdoms, and it has always played a crucial role in defence. Its history interested Viollet-le-Duc and Mérimée, who recognised its value. The restoration work became part of Carcassonne's history, recognised by UNESCO, and the architect's interventions added value to the monument. My interest stems from a desire to investigate a town of such importance and relevance, which is a direct witness to Viollet-le-Duc's theories of restoration, incorporating the values of medieval building traditions.
