A new margin for Rubattino. rethinking the suburbs

A case of gentrification. This area in Milano’s Lambrate district used to be quite different in the past. It was known for its connections to the so-called “mala”, the infamous criminal underworld of Milan. In a sense, it was a lost part of the city, somewhat like an island. If you wanted to find monkey business and drugs, you went there. Nowadays, however, you might only see remnants of that past. This area has undergone a significant transformation, changing from what it once was as artists began to move in, followed by architects. The change of Lambrate society also affected the evolution of the buildings in the neighbourhood, which reflect the gentrification process and its new urban morphologies. Gentrification is a complex issue; while it can bring revitalisation, it is often viewed negatively. It's important to understand the implications of this term properly. For instance, the arrival of wealthier residents can lead to the displacement of long-standing community members. The term 'gentrification' carries a negative connotation as it often suggests that only the affluent can afford to live in these areas. This thesis project is all about this.

Un caso di gentrificazione. Quest'area nel quartiere Lambrate di Milano era abbastanza diversa in passato. Era nota per i suoi legami con la cosiddetta 'mala', il criminale sottobosco infame di Milano. In un certo senso, era una parte perduta della città, un po' come un'isola. Se avessi voluto trovare affari loschi e droga, saresti andato lì. Oggi, tuttavia, puoi vedere solo i resti di quel passato. Quest'area ha subito una trasformazione significativa, cambiando da ciò che era un tempo, quando gli artisti hanno iniziato a trasferirsi, seguiti dagli architetti. Il cambiamento della società di Lambrate ha anche influito sull'evoluzione degli edifici nel quartiere, che riflettono il processo di gentrificazione e le sue nuove morfologie urbane.
