Abstract
Beyond physical decay, the built heritage is increasingly threatened by progressive abandonment due to social and economic factors. Abandoned or partially used historic buildings can be brought back to life through the introduction of new functions, in order to preserve the cultural identity that is at risk of being lost through prolonged neglect or disuse. This thesis focuses on the former Trombini Nursery School in Melegnano, built in 1887 as a kindergarten for the children of workers employed by the Trombini Company. The current state of neglect and underuse has prompted reflection on its potential recovery. Archival research was essential in building a comprehensive understanding of the site, revealing stories related to its philanthropic "founder" and the significance of his relationship with the building. The study of historical maps allowed for verification of its presence and evolution over time. An analysis of the building's features, based on historical floor plans, technical-administrative documents, and photographic reports, was carried out to assess the state and consistency of non-original elements. An interpretative study of the architectural typology aimed to explore the meanings of a building that, for its original function, appears as an "eclectic" piece of architecture, contextualized within the historical framework of 19th-century Italy. The rediscovery of the educational and social values embedded in the history of the building represents a key element in understanding its significance, and it has guided the choices made in defining a new function, one that seeks to renew its original social vocation through a conscious and respectful reuse project. To address the crucial question of the building’s regeneration, a compatible functional program was proposed, developed through the analysis of objective data from urban planning tools and an investigation of stakeholders potentially involved as future managers and users. This case study aims to contribute to an architecture that, while rooted in memory, looks toward the future with vision and purpose.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
