This thesis investigates the challenges and consequences of supplying construction aggregates in metropolitan areas, with a comparative focus on the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP) in Brazil and the Lombardy Region in Italy. The topic is highly relevant given the frequent construction activities in both regions and their significant contribution to global CO2 emissions. The main objective of the study is to quantify the environmental impact, particularly greenhouse gas emissions, of the aggregate supply chain, including the extraction of sand and gravel, the reprocessing of recycled materials, and the transportation to final destinations. To achieve this, the research employed a combination of data collection from governmental websites, the use of Google APIs, and proportional calculations based on the production of individual mines relative to the total output of each region. Tools such as Google Sheets, SIGMINE (for Brazilian data) and Regione Lombardia (for Italian data) were used to organize and analyze the data. The results highlight notable differences between the two regions in terms of aggregate production and logistics, as well as their respective contributions to environmental pollution. These findings aim to contribute to a broader understanding of the environmental footprint of the construction supply chain and support future policy and sustainability efforts in urban planning and infrastructure development.
Questa tesi analizza le sfide e le conseguenze legate alla fornitura di aggregati per l’edilizia nelle aree metropolitane, con un focus comparativo tra la Regione Metropolitana di San Paolo (RMSP) in Brasile e la Regione Lombardia in Italia. L’argomento è di grande rilevanza, considerando la frequente attività edilizia in entrambe le regioni e il loro contributo significativo alle emissioni globali di CO2. L’obiettivo principale dello studio è quantificare l’impatto ambientale, in particolare le emissioni di gas serra, della catena di approvvigionamento degli aggregati, inclusi l’estrazione di sabbia e ghiaia, il riutilizzo di materiali riciclati e il trasporto verso le destinazioni finali. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, la ricerca ha combinato la raccolta di dati da siti web governativi, l’utilizzo delle API di Google e calcoli proporzionali basati sulla produzione delle singole cave rispetto alla produzione totale di ciascuna regione. Strumenti come Google Sheets, SIGMINE (per i dati brasiliani) e Regione Lombardia (per i dati italiani) sono stati utilizzati per organizzare e analizzare le informazioni. I risultati evidenziano differenze significative tra le due regioni in termini di produzione di aggregati e logistica, nonché nel loro contributo all’inquinamento ambientale. Questi risultati mirano a contribuire a una comprensione più ampia dell’impronta ambientale della catena di fornitura edilizia e a supportare future politiche e iniziative di sostenibilità nella pianificazione urbana e nello sviluppo delle infrastrutture.
