Carte scoperte: l'unione tra gioco e progettazione nella riqualificazione dell' ex Galateo a Lecce

Most of the earth surface is marked by signs, whether consciousor not, left by those who came before us. Cities, villages, streets, houses, field (etc) are nothig more than testimonies that faithfully describe the society that preceded us. An thorough study of the context surrounding us can shed light on important informations, not only texplicit but also inherent. The urban document we recive today is an important manuscript for understanding the evolution of the city and its driving forces. There is not shortage of literature explaining how social and economic change is reflected in the urban form, gradually shaping it into the one we are most familiar with today. In the present day, with this excessive filling, we are witnessing a new process where the saturation of the fabric prevents large-scale interventions that were previously carried out. How can we address the new challenges of modernity if we cannot increase the available surface area? The shift away from the “short century” involves utilizing existing resources to improve the current situation. In the spirit of reusing the built environment, the City of Lecce initiated a call for projects regarding the old “Galateo” hospital structure. Located in a strategic position, it becomes a key node in a much broader project that connects the city center with the nearby suburbs. A particular area where an increasing number of actors and variables are involved, which rarely communicate with each other, and which is considered one of the most degraded parts of the nearby periphery. Thus, the way of thinking and conceiving of territory and its resources changes, no longer seen as a finished product, but as a construction site in continuous evolution. In this specific case, the reuse of this imposing building aims to create a solidarity-based condominium to include in the housing market those groups otherwise excluded, the reconstruction of the surrounding urban fabric, social inclusion, and the creation of a new economic flow both within and outside the building itself. Alongside the reuse design, there is an additional study that demonstrates how architecture and design can become resources that go beyond the boundaries of physical space. It thus becomes a true game, where different “cards” give rise to a range of combinations in the use and conception of the project.

La maggior parte della superficie terrestre è impiegata da segni, consapevoli o meno, lasciati da chi ci ha preceduto. Città, villaggi, strade, case, campi (etc) non sono altro che testimonianze che descrivono in maniera fedele la società che ci ha anticipato. Lo studio accurato del contesto, che ci circonda, è in grado di dare luce a importanti informazioni, non solo esplicite, ma anche insite. Il documento urbano che oggi riceviamo è un importante manoscritto per capire l’evoluzione della città e il motore. Si sprecano le letterature che spiegano come il cambiamento sociale ed economico si riflette di pari passo nella forma urbana, portandola fin alla forma a noi più familiare. Arrivati al giorno d’oggi a questo eccessivo riempimento, si assiste a un nuovo processo dove la saturazione del tessuto non permette i grandi interventi fino ad ora compiuti. Come fare per sovvenire alle nuove sfide della modernità se non si può aumentare la superficie disponibile? L’inversione di rotta rispetto al secolo breve porta l’impiego delle risorse già presenti al fine di migliorare la situazione attuale. Nello spirito del reimpiego dell’edificato, nasce il bando indetto dalla Città di Lecce sulla struttura del vecchio ospedale sanitario detto il “Galateo”. Situato in posizione strategica diventa un nodo nevralgico di un progetto molto più ampio che mette insieme il centro del capoluogo salentino con la più vicina periferia. Una zona particolare dove vengono intercalati sempre più attori e variabili, che difficilmente dialogano, e considerata una delle più degradate della vicina periferia. Cambia, quindi, il modo di pensare e concepire il territorio e le sue risorse, non più come un prodotto fatto e finito, ma come un cantiere in continua evoluzione. Nel caso specifico, il riutilizzo di questo imponente edificio, si pone come obiettivo la realizzazione di un condominio solidale, al fine di includere nel mercato dell’immobile tutte quelle fasce altrimenti esclude, la ricostruzione del tessuto urbano circostante, l’inclusione sociale e la creazione di un nuovo flusso economico interno ed esterno al corpo edificio stesso. Al disegno di riutilizzo si affianca un ulteriore studio che dimostra come l’architettura e la progettazione possano essere risorse che sfondano il perimetro del solo spazio. Diventa quindi un vero e proprio gioco dove sono le diverse carte a dare vita a una serie di combinazioni di utilizzo e concezione diversa del progetto.
