This thesis began as an intimate journey through the folds of Gallipoli, a city that cradled my childhood memories as the sea does the shore on summer afternoons. Alive, changeable, never quite graspable. Gallipoli is not only the place where sea and stone, history and season intertwine; it is also the point where interrupted dreams and longings for return meet. It is a city that crumbles and reassembles at every glance, a faithful mirror for those who leave and an emotional compass for those who return. The project is rooted in this affective and at the same time critical vision of the city. The choice of this area derives from the intention to reveal the marginal and silent places, once a womb of toil and matter. Today, those wounds in the ground are like pauses suspended in the urban fabric, spaces that ask to be heard rather than simply filled. A new life is imagined for these spaces: a transformation that enhances, capable of giving back to the city places of culture, dialogue and sharing of aesthetic and identity value. The design approach is guided by a sustainable and integrated vision, which takes into account environmental characteristics, the memory of the places and contemporary needs. The challenge was to combine traditional materials and techniques with a contemporary architectural language, capable of dialoguing with the context without distorting it. The quarries thus become a symbolic and functional node of a new urban narrative, in which the past is not erased but transformed into a resource for the present. Ultimately, this thesis is proposed as a design reflection that goes beyond the technical dimension: an attempt to mend the bond between territory and community, between memory and innovation, so that Gallipoli can recognise itself in a new urban form, inclusive, aware and capable of attracting through culture, not only tourism.
Questa tesi nasce come un viaggio intimo tra le pieghe di Gallipoli, città che ha cullato i miei ricordi d’infanzia come fa il mare con la riva nei pomeriggi d’estate. Vivo, mutevole, mai del tutto afferrabile. Gallipoli non è solo il luogo dove si intrecciano mare e pietra, storia e stagione; è anche il punto in cui si incontrano sogni interrotti e desideri di ritorno. È una città che si sfalda e si ricompone ad ogni sguardo, specchio fedele per chi parte e bussola emotiva per chi torna. Il progetto si radica in questa visione affettiva e allo stesso tempo critica della città. La scelta di quest’area deriva dall’intento di rivelare i luoghi marginali e silenziosi, un tempo grembo di fatica e materia. Oggi, quelle ferite nel terreno sono come pause sospese nel tessuto urbano, spazi che chiedono di essere ascoltati più che semplicemente riempiti. Si immagina per questi spazi una nuova vita: una trasformazione che valorizza, capace di restituire alla città luoghi di cultura, dialogo e condivisione del valore estetico e identitario. L’approccio progettuale è guidato da una visione sostenibile e integrata, che tiene conto delle caratteristiche ambientali, della memoria dei luoghi e delle esigenze contemporanee. La sfida è stata quella di coniugare materiali e tecniche tradizionali con un linguaggio architettonico attuale, capace di dialogare con il contesto senza snaturarlo. Le cave diventano così un nodo simbolico e funzionale di una nuova narrazione urbana, in cui il passato non è cancellato ma trasformato in risorsa per il presente. In definitiva, questa tesi si propone come una riflessione progettuale che va oltre la dimensione tecnica: un tentativo di ricucire il legame tra territorio e comunità, tra memoria e innovazione, affinché Gallipoli possa riconoscersi in una nuova forma urbana, inclusiva, consapevole e capace di attrarre attraverso la cultura, non solo il turismo.
