Porta Catena: reimagining the waterfront legacy as a cultural gateway

The area of Porto Catena, in the southeast corner of the city of Mantua, shows in its current deteriorated state a plethora of unresolved and unarticulated interventions, which obscure its historical relevance. It is difficult to recognise the role it had in the economical development of the city due to its commercial node connected to the inland network of river navigation in northern Italy. Similarly, it is challenging to acknowledge the importance of its role within the military defensive system of the perimeter walls that defined Mantua’s image as a fortified amidst the lakeside landscape. The aim of the thesis is initially to provide a historical review of the motivations and forces that led to the morphological transformation of the port and its context, and to explore the variation of the corresponding identity and perception of the place over time. Subsequently, building upon these studies the thesis hypothesises the reconstitution of the port's fluvial and cultural significance to the city, proposing an architectural and landscape project that highlights its historical legacy and positions it as a gateway to the city.

L'area di Porto Catena, nell'angolo sud-est della città di Mantova, mostra nel suo attuale stato di degrado una serie di interventi irrisolti e non articolati, che offuscano la sua rilevanza storica. È difficile riconoscere il ruolo che ha avuto nello sviluppo economico della città, a causa del suo nodo commerciale collegato alla rete fluviale interna del nord Italia. Allo stesso modo, è complesso riconoscere l'importanza del suo ruolo all'interno del sistema difensivo militare delle mura perimetrali che definivano l'immagine di Mantova come città fortificata verso il paesaggio lacustre. L'obiettivo della tesi è, inizialmente, fornire una revisione storica delle motivazioni e delle forze che hanno portato alla trasformazione morfologica del porto e del suo contesto, esplorando nel contempo la variazione dell'identità e della percezione del luogo nel tempo. Successivamente, costruendo su questi studi, la tesi ipotizza la ricostituzione del significato fluviale e culturale del porto per la città, proponendo un progetto architettonico e paesaggistico che esalta il suo lascito storico e lo posiziona come porta d'ingresso alla città.
