This thesis deals with the redevelopment of Palazzo Costa, a former Fire Station located in via Roma 87 in Mortara (PV), abandoned since 2019. The building represents an emblematic example of an “urban leftover”, as defined by Prof. Luciano Crespi: a suspended space, devoid of function and identity, in danger of dissolving into urban marginality with no prospects of redemption. The aim of the project is to restore centrality and value to this place through an interior and spatial design intervention, transforming it into a multifunctional centre open to citizens, aimed at promoting meeting, culture and hospitality. The project is the result of an in-depth historical, urban and social analysis of the city of Mortara, supplemented by documentary research on the building, architectural surveys and interviews with the local population, with the aim of intercepting real needs and shared prospects for use. The concept is developed around the metaphor of fire, understood as a symbol of regeneration, warmth and belonging. The design space is interpreted as a ‘dying sun’ that is about to go out, on the verge of definitive darkness, but still capable of being brought back to light. The flame thus becomes a design guide in the definition of new functions and flows capable of regenerating it. The project envisages the creation of reconfigurable spaces for cultural, educational and social activities: a tavern with a bar, a hostel for slow tourism, areas for study and coworking, carpentry and cycle workshops, spaces for physical wellbeing, environments for public events and recreational areas dedicated to young people. The project intends to generate a renewed sense of belonging, encourage contamination between generations and stimulate a new form of active and participatory citizenship.

Abstract
The project intends to generate a renewed sense of belonging, encourage contamination between generations and stimulate a new form of active and participatory citizenship.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
