The information was initially obtained from public sources and then further investigated through interviews conducted with strategic managers of the companies. This study sheds light on the types of innovation paths that insurers take. Through the construction of a framework, the study identified three types of innovative initiatives: i) those prioritized by insurers and independent from the external environment; ii) those prioritized but strongly influenced by external trends, and finally iii) innovation solely forced by external events. For each pathway, the role of technology was identified, considering where innovation occurs in terms of processes and models, finally assessing whether it is pursued with the support of external actors or just with company resources. This research expands the theoretical knowledge about the paths that bring insurers to pursue innovation. It also provides companies with a useful map for interpreting the pathways involving their innovation initiatives considering market factors and their own internal ambitions.

Abstract
Despite its conservative nature and a restrictive regulation, the insurance industry is being reshaped by digital innovation. The transformation of the industry goes along with the InsurTech phenomenon, which is the adoption of digital and emerging technologies with the aim of improving value chain processes, insurance products and traditional models. Although the literature is exhaustive on the process of innovation of insurers, the understanding of the path that brings it to life is still limited. This exploratory research aims to unveil the dynamics by which innovation is pursued by traditional insurers in the Italian market, in particular how pressures from the external environment act, what role the internal ambitions of companies play, and how these forces translate concretely into innovation initiatives. The research was carried out following a qualitative research approach based on nine case studies focusing on incumbent Italian insurers. It also provides companies with a useful map for interpreting the pathways involving their innovation initiatives considering market factors and their own internal ambitions.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
