Originally planned as a river port to take the place of the Darsena di Porta Ticinese, Porto di Mare is located in the southern region of Milan. Nevertheless, the project was never completed, and the land remains mostly undeveloped. At the moment, Porto di Mare is surrounded by infrastructure, residential communities, a variety of services, busy industrial locations, and agricultural regions. This is an area in Milan where a protected park (a big portion of Parco Agricolo Sud) coexists with an agricultural region that is still in use, sports activities, some manufacturing activity, and residential usage. Slightly cut off from the city center, Porto di Mare is next to one of Milan’s oldest residential areas. Redeveloping the neighborhood can also signify a revitalization of the Mazzini/Corvetto district. The Rogoredo Station acts as a primary hub for high-speed train services. While the station’s architectural quality and surrounding urban areas may not entirely represent this vision, it has become a vital hub for Italian high-speed rail service. The station serves a significant number of trains every day, establishing it as an essential section of Italy’s rail network. Similarly, the Porto di Mare subway station enhances the area’s accessibility, making it ideal for residential projects and sporting facilities. Furthermore, the Porto di Mare neighborhood, with its strategic position and combination of natural and urban components, plays an important role in preserving ecological balance within Milan’s urban environment. However, the region has traditionally been plagued by ownership disputes and failed restoration efforts. Despite these challenges, its complete public ownership represents a tremendous opportunity for future development, with the possibility for both environmental and infrastructure improvements. Situated near San Donato and Santa Giulia, protected agricultural fields (Parco Agricolo Sud Milano), and constructed residential zones, it’s at a cross roads. The neighborhood has potential for residential, commercial, and recreational purposes and is well-served by the Porto di Mare Metro and Rogoredo Station. Its fractured geography, historical usage, and interaction with the surrounding urban fabric must all be taken into consideration throughout any reconstruction, especially when it comes to strengthening its ties to Milan’s larger urban scene. The goal of the Porto di Mare vision is to build a dynamic, sustainable urban setting that respects the city’s historical value and blends in well with the surrounding natural areas. Utilizing the region’s architectural legacy, adding green areas from Parco Agricolo Sud Milano, and involving the neighborhood to make sure the project meets their requirements are the main strategies of the approach. The strategy’s key components include creative solutions to environmental problems, such as the existence of a landfill, and cooperative design with nearby redevelopment regions. Through an inclusive and transparent regeneration plan, the goals include maintaining the area’s historical character, improving connectivity, tackling issues related to social integration, and resolving ownership problems.
