Rigenerare, connettere, abitare : un progetto di rigenerazione urbana per il quartiere Rothenburgsort di Amburgo

The design proposal addresses the urban regeneration of Rothenburgsort, a port and industrial area in Hamburg that, over time, has lost its connection both with the river and the city due to historical and urban planning processes. This disconnection has resulted in a fragmented fabric, disjointed from the urban context and lacking a relationship with its local architectural identity. The research aims to answer the following question: How can the urban regeneration of industrial port areas that have lost their connection to the city and the river be addressed, while simultaneously respecting their local architectural identity? In the European context, some redevelopment strategies have favored the introduction of globalized architectures which, disregarding the local identity, have transformed these spaces into homogeneous environments disconnected from their history. In contrast to this trend, the project proposes an intervention based on the principles of critical reconstruction, drawing on German Expressionism, with the goal of re-establishing the relationship between Rothenburgsort, the city, and the river through a new balance of mixed uses — residential, commercial, work-related, and recreational. Building on the study of local case studies such as Bäckerbreitergang, Krayenkamp, and the Kontorhausviertel, as well as international experiences of port reconversion such as Puerto Madero and the La Boca neighborhood in Buenos Aires, the project seeks to recompose urban continuity through a new articulation of mixed uses — residential, commercial, productive, and recreational — that enables the restoration of the bond between Rothenburgsort, the city, and the river.

La proposta progettuale affronta la rigenerazione urbana di Rothenburgsort, un’area portuale e industriale di Amburgo che, nel corso del tempo, ha perso la propria connessione sia con il fiume che con la città a causa di processi storici e urbanistici. Questa disconnessione ha generato un tessuto frammentato, disarticolato rispetto al contesto urbano e privo di un legame con la sua identità architettonica locale. La ricerca si propone di rispondere alla seguente domanda: Come affrontare la rigenerazione urbana di aree industriali portuali che hanno perso la loro connessione con la città e con il fiume, rispettandone al contempo l’identità architettonica locale? Nel contesto europeo, alcune strategie di riqualificazione hanno privilegiato l’inserimento di architetture globalizzate che, prescindendo dall’identità locale, hanno trasformato questi spazi in ambienti omogenei e scollegati dalla loro storia. In opposizione a questa tendenza, il progetto propone un intervento fondato sui principi della ricostruzione critica, facendo riferimento all’espressionismo tedesco, con l’obiettivo di ristabilire la rel azione tra Rothenburgsort, la città e il fiume attraverso un nuovo equilibrio tra usi misti residenziali, commerciali, lavorativi e ricreativi. A partire dallo studio di casi locali come Bäckerbreitergang, Krayenkamp e il Kontorhausviertel, insieme ad esperienze internazionali di riconversione portuale come Puerto Madero e il quartiere di La Boca a Buenos Aires, il progetto mira a ricomporre la continuità urbana attraverso una nuova articolazione di usi misti — residenziali, commerciali, produttivi e ricreativi — che consenta di ristabilire il legame tra Rothenburgsort, la città e il fiume.
