Innovative Air Mobility & Delivery (IAM&D) represents a major innovation in transport, impacting both passenger and freight mobility. Despite ongoing technological, regulatory, and market uncertainty, the sector is rapidly emerging. Its sustainable growth depends on the availability of adequate competences and professional roles, yet a systematic assessment of existing and missing ones is still lacking. This research aims to address two main questions: RQ1: Which professional roles are currently present in the IAM&D sector in Italy? RQ2: Which competences are available, and which still need to be defined or developed to support sectoral growth? The study maps competences and professional positions in the Italian market, combining a literature review with an empirical analysis of 184 professional workers from 20 Italian companies. Empirically, roles were standardized using the O*NET database while professional experiences were categorized according to ATECO codes. Finally, competences were mapped through the framework developed by the Drones and Advanced Air Mobility Observatory of Politecnico di Milano. Results show that, at the level of professional roles, there is a predominance of technological-engineering (40%) and entrepreneurial/managerial positions (25%), reflecting a market largely driven by start-ups and SMEs. Regulatory, operational, and support functions remain a minority, representing a barrier to scalability. At the competence level, technological-engineering (32%) and strategic (24%) competences prevail, while regulatory/safety, operational and innovation competences are comparatively less developed. 56% of the identified competences are transversal, primarily originating from the aerospace, ICT, and advanced manufacturing sectors, confirming the hybrid and interdisciplinary nature of the IAM&D ecosystem. The contribution of this research is threefold. First, the literature review synthesizes the fragmented debate on the definition and mapping of competences in the IAM&D sector. Second, it develops an approach for mapping and standardizing roles, sectors and competences. Finally, results provide an updated snapshot of competences and roles in the Italian market for IAM&D.
Innovative Air Mobility & Delivery (IAM&D) rappresenta una delle principali innovazioni nel settore dei trasporti, con impatti rilevanti sia sulla mobilità passeggeri che su quella delle merci. Nonostante le persistenti incertezze tecnologiche, normative e di mercato, il settore sta emergendo rapidamente. La sua crescita sostenibile dipende dalla disponibilità di competenze e ruoli professionali adeguati, ma manca ancora una valutazione sistematica di quelli esistenti e di quelli ancora da sviluppare. Questa ricerca mira a rispondere a due domande principali: RQ1: Quali ruoli professionali sono attualmente presenti nel settore IAM&D in Italia? RQ2: Quali competenze sono disponibili e quali devono ancora essere definite o sviluppate per sostenere la crescita del settore? Lo studio mappa competenze e ruoli professionali nel mercato italiano, combinando una revisione della letteratura con un’analisi empirica di 184 professionisti appartenenti a 20 aziende italiane. Empiricamente, i ruoli sono stati standardizzati utilizzando il database O*NET, mentre le esperienze professionali sono state classificate secondo i codici ATECO. Infine, le competenze sono state mappate attraverso il framework sviluppato dall’Osservatorio Droni e Mobilità Aerea Avanzata del Politecnico di Milano. I risultati mostrano che, a livello di ruoli professionali, prevalgono le posizioni tecnologico-ingegneristiche (40%) e imprenditoriali/manageriali (25%), riflettendo un mercato fortemente trainato da start-up e PMI. Le funzioni normative, operative e di supporto rimangono minoritarie, rappresentando un ostacolo alla scalabilità. A livello di competenze, prevalgono quelle tecnologico-ingegneristiche (32%) e strategiche (24%), mentre le competenze regolatorie/sicurezza, operative e di innovazione risultano meno sviluppate. Il 56% delle competenze identificate è di tipo trasversale, proveniente principalmente dai settori aerospaziale, ICT e manifatturiero avanzato, a conferma della natura ibrida e interdisciplinare dell’ecosistema IAM&D. Il contributo di questa ricerca è triplice. In primo luogo, la revisione della letteratura sintetizza il dibattito frammentato sulla definizione e mappatura delle competenze nel settore IAM&D. In secondo luogo, sviluppa un approccio per la mappatura e la standardizzazione di ruoli, settori e competenze. Infine, i risultati forniscono un quadro aggiornato delle competenze e dei ruoli presenti nel mercato italiano dell’IAM&D.
