Organizational design in Entrepreneurial Ventures (EVs) has often been studied through isolated structural variables, such as hierarchy, specialization, or formalization. However, growing research emphasizes the need for a configurational perspective, which considers how these dimensions interact as coherent systems. This thesis advances this perspective by providing an integrative analysis of organizational design in EVs. The study pursues three objectives: to identify the organizational configurations of EVs, to explore the factors that influence configuration membership and to examine their evolution over time. To achieve this, we analyze a dataset of Italian EVs using cluster analysis, multinomial logit analysis of antecedents, and a longitudinal assessment of cluster stability. This methodological approach allows us to move beyond fragmented views and capture the systemic nature of design choices in early-stage firms. The findings reveal four distinct organizational configurations—Organic, CEO-Centric, Semi-Professionalized, and Professionalized—that can be positioned along a continuum of increasing professionalization. While the Organic cluster reflects minimal structure and informality, the other three demonstrate progressive forms of professionalization, each reflecting a distinct combination of organizational structure, human resource practices, and decision systems. The multinomial logit analysis highlights how firm- and context-specific factors, such as size, age, and funding, shape the likelihood of belonging to one configuration rather than another. Importantly, the longitudinal analysis shows that these structures remain relatively stable in the medium term, suggesting that early organizational choices have a persistent influence on venture development. This research contributes to theory by extending the configurational approach to the entrepreneurial context, demonstrating that EVs do not rely on a single archetype but on multiple coherent structural logics. At the same time, it offers practical insights for entrepreneurs and investors: entrepreneurs can align their organizational design with growth stages and available resources, while investors can interpret organizational structures as signals of scalability and governance readiness. Overall, the thesis provides a comprehensive framework for understanding organizational design in entrepreneurial ventures, highlighting both its diversity and persistence, and offering actionable guidance for theory and practice alike.

Abstract
Overall, the thesis provides a comprehensive framework for understanding organizational design in entrepreneurial ventures, highlighting both its diversity and persistence, and offering actionable guidance for theory and practice alike.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
