In the contemporary creative industry and post-feminist cultural context, could the representation of women and their bodies overcome traditional objectifying limitations and encourage the creation of alternative images capable of going beyond the male gaze? What is the definition of the female gaze? What are the alternative proposals in contemporary representation? This thesis takes place within the field of gender culture studies applied to communication design, with a particular focus on the transformative potential of images produced by the photography industry, between artistic and commercial projects. The thesis offers a scientific contribution through critical analysis and qualitative investigation of images, with the aim of collecting and studying photographic projects that offer alternative representations to the visual stereotypes generated, promoted, and conveyed by the dominant male gaze. The research begins with a theoretical analysis of the male gaze, developed by Mulvey, and an investigation of the nude as a representation of women throughout history, before delving deeper into post-feminism's interpretation of the representation of women in contemporary photography as a hybrid practice that both releases women from stereotypes and reinforces them. This analysis examines a significant case study, the Pirelli Calendar. Created to promote the tires of the Pirelli brand, this marketing product uses artistic nude photographs with women as the constant subject. This format allows us to observe the persistence of stereotypes and the sexualization of women’s bodies. Subsequently, the research explores the concept of the female gaze, attempting to frame the notion of the female gaze starting from its definition. A brief overview is provided of the work of female photographers who began to reflect on the representation of women from the dawn of photography. The focus of the work is a collection and analysis of the work of contemporary female photographers who are working to construct a different representation of women. The aim in investigating the concept of the female gaze is to highlight the change in perspective and the variety of alternative representations of women in today's visual landscape.
