This thesis explores an alternative approach to urbanization in small Austrian towns by focusing on the revitalization of abandoned agricultural buildings through the concept of Ordinary Universal Value (OUV). While urbanization research often prioritizes metropolitan areas, small towns face distinct challenges such as land consumption, population decline, and abandonment, all of which threaten their social and cultural fabric. These conditions, however, also provide opportunities to rethink the role of heritage and to reframe neglected sites as culturally significant resources. The research develops a theoretical framework around OUV, positioning it within heritage discourse as a means to recognize the cultural relevance of everyday, non-monumental sites that are frequently excluded from conventional classifications. By emphasizing the significance of ordinary and overlooked spaces, OUV offers a lens through which abandoned agricultural buildings can be reinterpreted as rural architectural legacies and reintegrated into the urban fabric, fostering continuity, resilience, and sustainable development in small towns. Building on this theoretical foundation, the thesis applies OUV to a design proposal for a neglected agricultural site in Bleiburg, Austria. Through an interpretative understanding of the site and scenario-based design strategies, the project explores revitalization approaches that balance rootedness with adaptability. The scenarios aim to establish a sensitive and evolving framework that ensures long-term cultural and social relevance while addressing contemporary urban challenges. This work contributes to the scientific discourse on heritage and sustainable urbanization by bridging theory and practice. It introduces OUV as a replicable framework for revitalizing abandoned sites, expanding the role of heritage from a backward-looking notion to a forward-oriented resource for urban resilience. In doing so, it challenges established heritage paradigms, fosters interdisciplinary discussion, and proposes a model for sustainable small-town development that acknowledges the enduring value of overlooked sites in shaping cultural and social continuity.

Abstract
In doing so, it challenges established heritage paradigms, fosters interdisciplinary discussion, and proposes a model for sustainable small-town development that acknowledges the enduring value of overlooked sites in shaping cultural and social continuity.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
