This thesis proposes a strategic urban regeneration project for Scalo Lambrate, a derelict railway yard in Milan, Italy. The study begins with an urban diagnosis conducted within the Integrated Modification Methodology (IMM) framework, which identified the site’s catalyst as a dysfunctional “interface” that physically and socially isolates the surrounding urban fabric. Recognizing this interface as the project’s catalyst, the proposed master plan focuses on its enhancement to positively affect other key IMM categories, including proximity, accessibility, and permeability, etc. Following this approach, the thesis develops a conceptual master plan based on a new, proposed interface, which is then refined into a final master plan for the site. The design outlines a comprehensive urban program that includes residential, commercial, and public functions, directly responding to the site’s complex heritage and physical constraints. It also incorporates a robust green infrastructure that enhances biodiversity and supports Milan's climate adaptation goals. To demonstrate the practical application of the broader urban strategy, the thesis then delves into a detailed case study of a single building on the site, examining its architectural, structural, and energy-related details. By applying a data-driven approach to an architectural and urban design challenge, the project demonstrates how the IMM can be a powerful tool for developing pragmatic and context-sensitive solutions for post-industrial sites. The resulting proposal not only reconnects the Scalo Lambrate site to its neighboring communities but also serves as a model for sustainable urban development that aligns with the ambitious targets of the C40 Cities Reinventing Cities program.
Questa tesi propone un progetto di rigenerazione urbana strategica per lo Scalo Lambrate, un’area ferroviaria dismessa a Milano. Lo studio inizia con una diagnosi urbana condotta all’interno del quadro metodologico (IMM) Integrated Modification. Methodology, che ha identificato l’elemento catalizzatore del sito come un’”interfaccia” disfunzionale che isola fisicamente e socialmente il tessuto urbano circostante. Riconoscendo questa interfaccia come catalizzatore del progetto, il piano regolatore proposto si concentra sul suo potenziamento per influenzare positivamente altre categorie chiave dell’IMM, tra cui prossimità, accessibilità, permeabilità, ecc. Seguendo questo approccio, la tesi sviluppa un piano concettuale basato su una nuova interfaccia proposta, che viene poi perfezionato in un piano regolatore finale per il sito. Il progetto delinea un programma urbano completo che include funzioni residenziali, commerciali e pubbliche, rispondendo direttamente alla complessa eredità e ai vincoli fisici del sito. Incorpora inoltre una robusta infrastruttura verde che migliora la biodiversità e supporta gli obiettivi di adattamento climatico di Milano. Per dimostrare l’applicazione pratica della strategia urbana più ampia, la tesi si addentra in un dettagliato studio di caso di un singolo edificio all’interno del sito, esaminandone i dettagli architettonici, strutturali ed energetici. Applicando un approccio basato sui dati a una sfida di progettazione architettonica e urbana, il progetto dimostra come l’IMM possa essere un potente strumento per sviluppare soluzioni pragmatiche e sensibili al contesto per i siti post-industriali. La proposta finale non solo riconnette lo Scalo Lambrate alle comunità circostanti, ma serve anche da modello per uno sviluppo urbano sostenibile che si allinea con gli ambiziosi obiettivi del programma C40 Cities Reinventing Cities.
