This thesis intends to analyse how family businesses can be successful and retain their competitive advantage in a globalized and competitive world. In particular, the aim is to focus on internationalization, the pros and cons of investing and developing subsidiaries in new markets, and the possible path that a firm can take. The study examines the various factors that lead to the choice to internationalize, including business risk position, long-term orientation, and relevant socio-economic factors. The research offers valuable insights to businesses that want to expand their markets, be competitive, and reduce the risk of failure. Subsequently, the thesis takes a close look at the 2a spa case that recently went through this process to enter new markets and acquire new clients. Did they use the right strategy? Was it successful? What could have been done differently? This case illustrates that organizations face unpredictable difficulties when entering a new market. Companies need to adapt their strategies. 2a initially struggled and subsequently had to change its vision and plans to achieve its objectives. The main challenges to address were bounded rationality and reliability, as described by Verbeke.
