This thesis explores the phenomenology of memory in the urban landscape, aiming to understand how collective spaces gain, transform and lose meaning over time. It considers memory as a discourse shaped by power, embedded in public space, and capable of determining how people interact, appropriate, and inhabit the city. The work begins by studying the theory that that address memory and urban space., resulting in a phenomenology of memory that shows how it is sustained not only by monuments and memorials but also by everyday places. The student identifies five forms of memory: colonial, state-constructed, erased, reclaimed and everyday, and explores how they interact and overlap in shaping collective experience.. Cities,in their multiple layers and spaces are shown as palimpsest, layered with conflicted and contested narratives, influencing its identities. The thesis focuses on Bogotá’s city center as a case study where all these forms of memory converge. It analyzes how memory is inscribed in designed spaces, how it disappears through neglect, demolition, or official discourse, and how it resurfaces through everyday practices and acts of resistance. The thesis highlights how memory continously reshaped urban landscapes, stating cities as not fixed landscapes but as living arenas where history, identity and power are constantly in negociation.
