Digital twin (DT) technology is gaining increasing attention in the medical field. It can enable the provision of personalized, predictive and data-driven care. By modeling physiological processes, predicting disease progression, and assisting in clinical decision-making, digital technologies offer a promising approach to improve personalized treatment and healthcare management at the systemic level. However, despite growing interest in research, many DT implementations are still in the conceptual development or prototype stage. Unresolved technical, regulatory, and ethical challenges limit their clinical integration. The aim of this study is to provide a structured overview of DTs current application in healthcare, and to identify key challenges and future research directions that could enable their adoption. Through a review of recent literature, this work highlights the main application domains, service functionalities, technological maturity, and barriers that must be addressed to support the clinical translation of DT technologies.

Abstract
Through a review of recent literature, this work highlights the main application domains, service functionalities, technological maturity, and barriers that must be addressed to support the clinical translation of DT technologies.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
