The thesis investigates the contemporary transformations of the Arctic landscape, focusing on how climate change, the decline of extractive activities, and emerging environmental narratives are reshaping place identity and design perspectives in the region. Particular attention is given to the role of architecture in responding to extreme climate conditions, permafrost instability, and the growing need for resilient and adaptive infrastructures. The research is grounded in a seven-month field study conducted between Svalbard and Tromsø, allowing for direct engagement with the territory, local communities, and evolving spatial dynamics. Through an interdisciplinary lens, the thesis interweaves the physical, cultural, and symbolic dimensions of the Arctic, reflecting on the potential of vernacular architecture as both a form of situated knowledge and a strategy for adaptation. It also serves as a foundation for envisioning new scenarios of coexistence between humans, nature, and historical memory. The work includes an atlas of infrastructural vulnerabilities and a mapping of Arctic geological landscapes, offering critical and operative insights for designing in a territory undergoing profound transformation.
La tesi esplora le trasformazioni in atto nel paesaggio artico contemporaneo, osservando come il cambiamento climatico, la fine delle attività estrattive e le nuove narrazioni ambientali stiano ridefinendo il senso di luogo e le prospettive progettuali nell’Artico. In particolare, si analizza il ruolo dell’architettura nel confrontarsi con condizioni climatiche estreme, l’instabilità del permafrost e la necessità di infrastrutture resilienti e adattive. La ricerca si fonda su un periodo di studio e osservazione sul campo di sette mesi trascorso tra le Svalbard e Tromsø, che ha permesso un confronto diretto con il territorio, le comunità locali e le dinamiche spaziali in trasformazione. Attraverso un approccio interdisciplinare, l’indagine intreccia aspetti fisici, culturali e simbolici del paesaggio artico, riflettendo sul potenziale dell’architettura vernacolare come strumento di conoscenza e adattamento, nonché come punto di partenza per immaginare nuovi scenari di coesistenza tra uomo, ambiente e memoria storica. La tesi include un atlante delle vulnerabilità infrastrutturali e una mappatura dei paesaggi geologici artici, proponendo letture critiche e operative in un contesto in profonda transizione.
