The thesis assesses the main critical issues of Italian women’s prison spaces within an environment that fails to pursue rehabilitative aims as it should. Drawing on the scientific literature on the subject and reports by associations working in the field, and starting from a reflection on the specificities and needs of women’s imprisonment and its shortcomings, the research seeks to identify the key prerequisites useful for implementing care-informed interventions in existing prison wards. The hypothesis is tested through a case study of the San Vittore prison in Milan, where access to the women’s ward made it possible to analyse the presence or absence of these prerequisites, their potential for implementation, and their relative significance. This fieldwork in the women’s ward of San Vittore—carried out also thanks to dialogue with the OffCampus San Vittore structure—allowed for an assessment of whether or not it functioned as a care space, what prospects existed for future interventions, and what difficulties the site posed in terms of accessibility and project feasibility. Consequently, it was possible to develop an evaluation and revision of the preliminary prerequisites. At the conclusion of this process, the thesis sets out a series of recommendations, referring to key aspects of administrative and territorial governance, and proposing guidelines for interventions in women’s prison spaces inspired by the principles of gender-sensitive, care-informed and trauma-informed design, in the current context of administrative and advocacy shortcomings within the observed prison system.

Abstract
At the conclusion of this process, the thesis sets out a series of recommendations, referring to key aspects of administrative and territorial governance, and proposing guidelines for interventions in women’s prison spaces inspired by the principles of gender-sensitive, care-informed and trauma-informed design, in the current context of administrative and advocacy shortcomings within the observed prison system.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
