On the table, an open map: an extremely dense and compact urban fabric, Milan. Very few voids within the entire metropolis! Why is that? Simple: it is Milan’s response to the ever-growing demand for work and housing, the city has greatly expanded, it has grown enormously. But at the expense of whom and of what? Of the citizens and of shared spaces. Sharing spaces, having places for socialization: a shared need! A fact: today, in the Milanese territory, these very places intended for socialization and sharing are missing, there is a shortage of accessible and informal spaces where citizens can meet and carry out collective activities. Instead, one should go in the opposite direction: increase the number of these convivial places. But how? The answer comes almost spontaneously: use the only vacant areas left in the built fabric, or create new ones, as well as the environments nowadays dedicated to citizens. A solution to be discarded because this would mean demolishing and/or cementing Milan even further. Another solution: new interventions in parks, squares, or green areas, the only shared spaces left to the population? Feasible, but something better can be found. The solution? An optimal re-functionalization of available and underused roof surfaces present in the city. If, as claimed by Chipperfield, once the commercial spaces of the city represented a meeting point and conviviality for the citizens, a role that in today’s territorial planning has been lost, then, why not intervene on the roofs of Milanese commercial buildings, such as supermarkets or shops, with the intention of uniting in a single vision the commercial space and that of society? Why not install public sports infrastructures within these shared spaces of the metropolis? Sport thus becomes the means to experience the city, a means capable of breaking down the boundaries between inside and outside, between private space and public space. But how to integrate these structures, simple to manage and to activate, within existing infrastructures, such as supermarkets, giving them back an active role in the urban fabric and contributing to the construction of new forms of sociability? Our thesis aims to be an answer: a repertoire of light and small-scale design solutions, conceived for the creation of social and sports spaces within the city of Milan. Our objective? To enhance the flat roofs of already existing commercial buildings in the Milanese urban fabric, transforming them into places of public gathering. To give back to the citizens the urban spaces from which they have been deprived within the territory they inhabit. To promote new forms of sociability, sport, and inclusion. How? Through the use of temporary and reversible infrastructures. That’s it! With minimal interventions, it is possible to change the landscape of the city of Milan and at the same time rethink, in parallel, commerce, not only with an economic function, but as an urban component, thus fostering the integration between market, urban planning, and social life.
Davvero pochi i vuoti all’interno dell’intera metropoli! Come mai? Come?
