In the years 2023–2024, area of Modigliana, located in the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy, was severely impacted by serval record-breaking rainstorm and extreme weather, causing floodings and landslides destroying the local infrastructures such as bridges and highways. Damaged the main critical road connections to the neighboring city Faenza, leaving the town physically and economically isolated from outside connections. This thesis explores the role of architecture in post-disaster recovery through the way of “resilient design”, focusing on how architectural design, landscape design and infrastructural interventions can restore and reimagine connectivity, social vitality, and ecological balance in vulnerable rural contexts, helping residents in Modigliana facing the growing challenge of climate change. Through site analysis, hydrological mapping, and other cases around the world, the research identifies critical vulnerabilities in Modigliana’s terrain and infrastructure. The design proposal introduces a multi-layered response that includes a new mobility corridor, an integrated community center, and a landscape-based flood treatment system, aiming to transform this targeted area into a composite regeneration open space. This work positions architecture both as a tool for rebuilding, and a medium for “responding future risk”, “reconnecting fragmented communities”, and “utilization of natural landscape” for the future changing climate.
Negli anni 2023–2024, l’area di Modigliana, situata nella regione Emilia-Romagna nel nord Italia, è stata gravemente colpita da diverse tempeste di pioggia di intensità record e da eventi meteorologici estremi, che hanno provocato inondazioni e frane distruggendo le infrastrutture locali, come ponti e autostrade. Sono stati danneggiati i principali collegamenti stradali critici con la vicina città di Faenza, lasciando il paese isolato fisicamente ed economicamente dai collegamenti esterni. Questa tesi esplora il ruolo dell’architettura nella fase di recupero post-disastro attraverso l’approccio del “design resiliente”, concentrandosi su come la progettazione architettonica, il design del paesaggio e gli interventi infrastrutturali possano ristabilire e ripensare la connettività, la vitalità sociale e l’equilibrio ecologico in contesti rurali vulnerabili, aiutando i residenti di Modigliana ad affrontare la crescente sfida del cambiamento climatico. Attraverso l’analisi del sito, la mappatura idrologica e lo studio di altri casi a livello globale, la ricerca individua le principali vulnerabilità del territorio e delle infrastrutture di Modigliana. La proposta progettuale introduce una risposta multilivello che comprende un nuovo corridoio di mobilità, un centro comunitario integrato e un sistema paesaggistico di trattamento delle acque alluvionali, con l’obiettivo di trasformare quest’area in uno spazio aperto di rigenerazione composita. Questo lavoro considera l’architettura non solo come uno strumento di ricostruzione, ma anche come un mezzo per “rispondere ai rischi futuri”, “riconnettere comunità frammentate” e “valorizzare il paesaggio naturale” in vista dei cambiamenti climatici futuri.
