This research focuses on a forgotten heritage, the urban heritage resulting from Italian immigration to Brazil. It aims to explore the reasons behind its undervaluation and the limited preservation of such heritage. Moreover, it examines how current management practices are impacting its conservation. In pursuit of this, the study not only elucidates the functioning of heritage protection in Brazil but also evaluates the policies and programmes in place for managing this heritage, assessing their effectiveness. The two cities selected for the case studies (Antônio Prado and Urussanga) are analysed in greater depth, focusing on their protection, the values inherent in these sites, and the policies that have been applied. With the data gathered and acknowledging that management based on more traditional concepts of heritage has not yielded the desired outcomes, this research proposes reinterpreting these spaces as urban historical landscapes. This perspective moves beyond the isolated notion of material heritage and advocates for a more holistic and integrated approach to urban heritage management, drawing on the UNESCO methodology outlined in the 2011 Recommendation on Historic Urban Landscapes. The overarching objective of this investigation is to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and conserving this urban heritage, characterised by modest architecture, ensuring that existing assets are adequately protected, conserved and valorised, as well as being understood as an asset to the city's livability. Additionally, it seeks to promote the adoption of this expanded, integrated management approach for similar heritage sites.
