The first Gae 1955-1979 : imagined cities in early projects

My research project covers historical work that is based on the scientific evidence dictated by materials within the Aulenti archive. The research intends to examine Gae Aulenti’s early works and how her formative years (1955-1979) shaped and influenced future masterpieces. By digging into her own Milanese archive, the analysis of unexplored projects will question the role of the existing places and contexts where they were set, while investigating plots, hidden narratives, and protagonists. Thus, the reconstruction of the cultural, political and socio-economical workshop in which the Italian architect was operating is interpreted by means of a careful analysis and interpretation of various means: personal notes on diaries, drawings, correspondences, administrative and archival documents, photographs, and oral history interviews. The chosen theme is the ‘staged city’, that is a signifying environment, a concept that returns cyclically in Aulenti's projects from the first twenty years of his career. The urban scale, investigated by means of documentary and critical insights, is implicitly present in the interiors designed by the architect, in the exhibition layouts, in the shops realized and in the cities left ‘hanging’ like dreams on paper.

La ricerca storica, che si basa sull'evidenza scientifica dettata dai materiali dell'archivio Aulenti, intende esaminare i primi lavori di Gae Aulenti (1955-1979) e come i suoi anni formativi abbiano plasmato e influenzato le sue future opere. Tra le carte dell’archivio milanese, l'analisi di progetti inesplorati mette in discussione il ruolo dei luoghi e dei contesti in cui essi si trovano, indagando trame, narrazioni nascoste e protagonisti. La ricostruzione del laboratorio culturale, politico e socio-economico in cui operava l'architetto italiano, viene così interpretata attraverso un'attenta analisi ed esegesi di materiali archivistici: appunti personali su diari, elaborati grafici, corrispondenza, documentazione amministrativa, fotografie, rassegna ed estratti stampa, interviste di varia natura. Il tema scelto è quello della “città in scena”, della città come ambiente significante, un concetto che ritorna ciclicamente nei progetti aulentiani dei primi vent’anni di carriera. La scala urbana, indagata per mezzo di affondi documentari e critici, è implicitamente presente negli interni progettati dall’architetto, negli allestimenti espositivi, nei negozi realizzati e nelle città rimaste “appese” come sogni su carta.
