The thesis analyses the process of building the organizational legitimacy of digital platforms operating in traditional and institutionally complex sectors, focusing on the case of the Italian startup B4Log, active in the logistics sector. The goal is to understand how a digital enterprise can gain recognition and trust in an ecosystem characterized by long-standing relationships and a low propensity for innovation. Integrating organizational legitimacy theory (Suchman, 1995) and platform economy studies, the research adopts an exploratory qualitative approach based on a single case and applies the Gioia Methodology to build an inductive model of the legitimacy process. The analysis shows that legitimacy is articulated along four dimensions: pragmatic, moral, cognitive, and an empirically emerged fourth relational dimension, which emphasizes the role of trust, collaboration, and social capital in the diffusion of digital innovation in traditional contexts. The study contributes to expanding the literature on organizational legitimacy, highlighting the dynamic and co-constructed nature of institutional recognition, and offers practical implications for startups and policymakers engaged in digitizing established industries.
La tesi analizza il processo di costruzione della legittimità organizzativa delle piattaforme digitali operanti in settori tradizionali e istituzionalmente complessi, con focus sul caso della startup italiana B4Log, attiva nel settore della logistica. L’obiettivo è comprendere come un’impresa digitale possa ottenere riconoscimento e fiducia in un ecosistema caratterizzato da relazioni consolidate e scarsa propensione all’innovazione. Integrando la teoria della legittimità organizzativa (Suchman, 1995) e gli studi sulla platform economy, la ricerca adotta un approccio qualitativo esplorativo basato su un caso singolo e applica la Gioia Methodology per costruire un modello induttivo del processo di legittimazione. L’analisi mostra che la legittimità si articola lungo quattro dimensioni: pragmatica, morale, cognitiva e una quarta relazionale, emersa empiricamente, che sottolinea il ruolo di fiducia, collaborazione e capitale sociale nella diffusione dell’innovazione digitale in contesti tradizionali. Lo studio contribuisce ad ampliare la letteratura sulla legittimità organizzativa, evidenziando la natura dinamica e co-costruita del riconoscimento istituzionale, e offre implicazioni pratiche per startup e policy maker impegnati nella digitalizzazione dei settori industriali consolidati.
