Social Housing in Karantina, Beirut – A Post-Crisis Urban Rehabilitation Over the recent years , Lebanon has faced many acute crisis due to poor governance and economic instablity . The country’s incompetent rulers have never initiated a sustainable and balanced territorial development . For a population traumatized by successive wars and abusiveness, a new pole is proposed in the neglected region of Karantina. This neighborhood , severly impacted by the Beirut Blast due to its proximity to the port , is sitting on the verge of its complete collapse .In order to initiate proper integration of poor, disaster-stricken and displaced populations, a program is designed to allow coordination with civil defense and non-governmental humanitarian organizations. The Karantina district of Beirut, historically a working-class neighborhood, has long faced socio-economic marginalization, exacerbated by the 2020 Beirut Port explosion. This research proposes a social housing project aimed at addressing the district’s urgent need for affordable, resilient, and community-oriented living spaces. By integrating participatory design strategies and sustainable architectural solutions, the project seeks to provide dignified housing while fostering social cohesion. The study will explore adaptive construction techniques to accommodate the evolving needs of residents, ensuring long-term urban resilience. Ultimately, this project envisions Karantina as a model for post-crisis rehabilitation, where social housing serves as a catalyst for inclusive urban regeneration.
