This thesis investigates how design can cultivate attunement to microbial life by shifting from knowing about microbes to knowing with them, treating microbes as co-constitutive of human bodies and perception. It foregrounds microbial temporalities—slow, rhythmic, contextual—requiring temporal, embodied mediation rather than revelation. Situated within more-than-human Research-through-Design, the work adopts a mediation-over-control stance: time as design material, tools as care ecologies, and evaluation for mediation (attunement, negotiation, clarity, affect) under minimal capture and visible governance. This framework operationalizes ethical/political watchpoints for MTHD and positions validity in credibility and accountability rather than hypothesis testing. Methodologically, two empirical threads—twelve semi-structured interviews and a low-tech bacterial culture study—inform Borrowed Body, a sound-led installation that defers vision so that pace becomes the entry point to relation. The v1 prototype used Wizard-of-Oz control to stabilize state changes of the interactive installation; the software used to implement the orchestration of audio and minimal visuals, was TouchDesigner. Finally, a situated evaluation emphasized experience over metrics; participants slowed down, probed agency by alternating motion and stillness, and some reframed microbes from “tiny others” to co-constitutive matter.

Abstract
Finally, a situated evaluation emphasized experience over metrics; participants slowed down, probed agency by alternating motion and stillness, and some reframed microbes from “tiny others” to co-constitutive matter.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
