Dory Empty Pocket, a user-friendly, acoustic domestic interface for contextual reminders. Innovating product-system design through conversational, human-centred technology

The present thesis investigates the relationship between time perception, memory and attention within the context of contemporary domestic life, analysing how digital saturation affects the everyday behaviour of Generation Z. Specifically, the phenomenon of forgetfulness has been identified as a primary factor contributing to the delays experienced by this cohort. The research identifies the home entrance as a cognitive threshold where gestures and routines converge, a finding supported by theoretical analysis, user observation, and surveys. In this context, contemporary smart devices are regarded as intrusive, emphasising the necessity for artefacts that can transform routine actions into discreet, significant, and context-aware interactions. The Dory Empty Pocket project embodies this philosophy; it is a smart valet tray integrating RFID recognition, personal and smart reminders, and household messaging to support attention and prevent forgetfulness. The product has been developed through a human-centred and iterative process, combining empathy, simplicity, and adaptability to deliver calm and intuitive interaction. The study synthesises theoretical insights, market analysis and design experimentation, thereby translating the concept of silent design into a tangible solution for dynamic, temporary living spaces. The thesis ultimately positions Dory as a link between design research and entrepreneurship, proposing a vision of technology that aims to restore focus and emotional balance within domestic environments. This redefines smart living as an experience of awareness rather than automation.

La seguente tesi indaga il rapporto tra percezione del tempo, memoria e attenzione all’interno del contesto domestico contemporaneo. In particolare, osservando come la digitalizzazione e la saturazione cognitiva influenzino i comportamenti della Generazione Z, è emerso come una delle cause più frequenti dei ritardi è la smemoratezza. Attraverso analisi teoriche, ricerche qualitative e user survey, la ricerca ha identificato l’ingresso di casa come uno spazio cognitivo critico in cui gesti e routine quotidiane convergono. In tale contesto, i classici smart device risultano intrusivi, sottolineando l’esigenza di artefatti in grado di trasformare gesti ordinari in interazioni significative, silenziose e contestuali. Il progetto Dory Empty Pocket rappresenta la prima applicazione concreta di questa visione: un dispositivo domestico che integra riconoscimento RFID, promemoria intelligenti e messaggi condivisi per sostenere l’attenzione e prevenire la dimenticanza. Sviluppato con un approccio human-centred, il prodotto combina empatia, semplicità e adattabilità, offrendo un’esperienza di interazione calma e discreta. La ricerca unisce riflessione teorica, benchmarking e sperimentazione progettuale, traducendo la filosofia del silent design in una soluzione concreta per ambienti abitativi dinamici e temporanei. La tesi propone infine una prospettiva imprenditoriale che coniuga design, benessere cognitivo e sostenibilità domestica, delineando Dory come strumento capace di ricostruire equilibrio tra tecnologia, memoria e tempo vissuto.
