The growing complexity of contemporary social challenges requires collaborative approaches capable of generating systemic and inclusive innovation. In this scenario, social innovation and co-design emerge as key practices for addressing problems that traditional institutions battle to solve. At the same time, the pervasive spread of data is transforming the way we understand and address these challenges. However, the role of data in these processes remains fragmented and is often interpreted in an instrumental way. This research aims to fill this gap by exploring how data can act as enabling and generative resources in co-design processes for social innovation. To this end, a qualitative and abductive approach was adopted, divided into three phases. First, a literature review mapped the conceptual links between data, co-design and social innovation, leading to the definition of the CoData Framework in its first conceptual version. This model identifies six main roles that data can play in co-design processes. Subsequently, a multiple analysis of ten case studies and the conduct of three focus groups allowed the framework to be validated and refined empirically, resulting in a consolidated version. The thesis therefore proposes a reconfiguration of data as relational, capable of supporting processes of inclusion, learning and collaboration within co-design processes to enable social innovation.
La crescente complessità delle sfide sociali contemporanee richiede approcci collaborativi capaci di generare innovazione sistemica e inclusiva. In questo scenario, l’innovazione sociale e il co-design emergono come pratiche chiave per affrontare problemi che le istituzioni tradizionali faticano a risolvere. Parallelamente, la diffusione pervasiva dei dati sta trasformando il modo in cui comprendiamo e affrontiamo tali sfide. Tuttavia, il ruolo dei dati in tali processi rimane ancora frammentato e spesso interpretato in modo strumentale. Questa ricerca mira a colmare tale lacuna esplorando come i dati possano agire come risorse abilitanti e generative nei processi di co-design per l’innovazione sociale. A tal fine, è stato adottato un approccio qualitativo e abduttivo, articolato in tre fasi. In primo luogo, una revisione della letteratura ha permesso di mappare i legami concettuali tra dati, co-design e innovazione sociale, portando alla definizione del CoData Framework nella sua prima versione concettuale. Tale modello identifica sei ruoli principali che i dati possono assumere nei processi di co-design. Successivamente, una analisi multipla di dieci casi studio e la conduzione di tre focus groups hanno consentito di validare e affinare empiricamente il framework, restituendone una versione consolidata. La tesi propone quindi una riconfigurazione dei dati come relazionali, in grado di sostenere processi di inclusione, apprendimento e collaborazione all'interno di processi di co-design per abilitare l'innovazione sociale.
