Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how the structural changes, power asymmetries, and systemic pressures within the fashion supply chain affect the people working at its lower tiers, with a particular focus on the often-overlooked subcontractors. Design/methodology/approach: The research took a qualitative approach with an extreme case study in Türkiye, exploring the issues of power imbalances, performance measurement systems, and various forms of violence in the global fashion supply chain. Findings: In this study, it has been found that the current situation of the fashion supply chain, which consists of power asymmetry and dependence, unfavourable workplace conditions, and market shifts, has several adverse economic, psychological and social effects on people working in this industry. The efficiency-oriented approach of global brands, coupled with the “one-size-fits-all” decision-making mindset, puts their lower-tier suppliers under huge pressure. The fact that, especially, the subcontractors are highly dependent on their brands in terms of financial security and profit, creates a hierarchical order. To resolve this imbalance, several possible solutions are suggested in this study as building networking and credibility, better leadership and empowerment practices, and suitable business model adaptations. Overall, the findings showed that a people-centric approach and profit-making can go hand in hand, and the exceptional subcontractor from Türkiye is living proof of it. Originality/value: This paper shows how the practices of global fashion brands affect lower-tier suppliers, especially subcontractors, and through which mechanisms they could cope with that. This research opens a new phase for discussion on what happens in a supply chain from the top to the bottom, especially in times of change.
