Governments around the world are being prompted by growing concerns about global warming to hasten the shift to sustainable public transportation, also by adopting electric buses. However, range anxiety, which is closely linked to high energy consumption, strongly limits the adoption of electric buses. To address this issue, this thesis analyses, using a driving simulator, the impact that different driving styles have on energy consumption. First, a driving simulator specifically for electric buses was developed, including the hardware and software components necessary to accurately replicate vehicle dynamics and energy consumption. In order to simulate both urban and suburban operating conditions, two representative bus line scenarios from the city of Turin are created. Both routes are tested by a professional driver, allowing the gathering of comprehensive driving and energy data. The accuracy of the simulator is confirmed by comparing its output with actual measurements taken during on-road testing. Ultimately, the analysis demonstrates how driving habits, also influenced by the time of day, have a substantial impact on the energy efficiency of the vehicle, highlighting the significance of driver awareness and training in maximizing the operational performance of electric buses.
I governi di tutto il mondo sono spinti dalle crescenti preoccupazioni per il surriscaldamento globale ad accelerare il passaggio a un trasporto pubblico sostenibile anche attraverso l'adozione di autobus elettrici. Tuttavia, la short range anxiety, che è strettamente legata all'elevato consumo energetico, ne limita fortemente la diffusione. Per indirizzare tale problematica, questa tesi analizza, mediante l'uso di un simulatore di guida, l'impatto che i diversi stili di guida degli autisti hanno sui consumi. Innanzitutto è stato creato un simulatore di guida specifico per gli autobus elettrici, realizzando gli elementi hardware e software necessari per replicare accuratamente le dinamiche del veicolo e l'andamento dei consumi energetici. Al fine di simulare tutte le condizioni operative, urbane e suburbane, sono state mappate due linee della città di Torino, rappresentative dei diversi scenari. Uno dei percorsi è stato testato da un conducente professionista, per raccogliere dati completi di guida ed energetici. La precisione del simulatore è stata confermata confrontando il suo output con le misure reali rilevate durante i test su strada. Infine, l'analisi ha dimostrato come i diversi stili di guida, influenzati anche dal momento della giornata, hanno un impatto sostanziale sull'efficienza energetica del veicolo, evidenziando l'importanza della consapevolezza e della formazione degli autisti per massimizzare le performance operative degli autobus elettrici.
