Topography of wounds : an evolving landscape for former Italsider in Bagnoli

The thesis investigates the transformation of the former Italsider industrial area in Bagnoli, Naples — a site that embodies both the physical and emotional wounds of a territory marked by production, abandonment, and memory. The project explores how a wounded landscape can be reactivated without erasing its scars, seeking forms of care rather than complete restoration. The research begins with the analysis of the geological and ecological context of the Gulf of Naples, revealing a fragile and complex territory shaped by volcanic processes and human industry. A critical reading of the site highlights its persistent contamination, its spontaneous forms of renaturalization, and the symbolic role of its ruins within the collective imagination of Naples. Through the study of post-industrial landscapes and ecological design strategies, the thesis proposes a method based on six layers of action: nurturing vegetation, consolidating existing paths, conserving the topography through soft remediation, preserving the industrial ruins as narrative elements, reconnecting water systems, and reviving the sterile landfill into a living ground. The resulting project envisions Bagnoli as an evolving landscape, one that grows rather than is built, where time, vegetation, and memory become agents of transformation. The design does not close the wound but allows it to remain open, turning fragility into structure and incompleteness into the foundation of a new identity.

La tesi indaga la trasformazione dell’ex area industriale Italsider di Bagnoli, a Napoli — un luogo che racchiude le ferite fisiche ed emotive di un territorio segnato dalla produzione, dall’abbandono e dalla memoria. Il progetto esplora come un paesaggio ferito possa essere riattivato senza cancellarne le cicatrici, cercando forme di cura piuttosto che una completa rigenerazione. La ricerca parte dall’analisi del contesto geologico ed ecologico del Golfo di Napoli, rivelando un territorio fragile e complesso, modellato da processi vulcanici e da interventi umani. Una lettura critica del sito evidenzia la persistenza dell’inquinamento, le forme spontanee di rinaturalizzazione e il valore simbolico delle rovine industriali all’interno dell’immaginario collettivo napoletano. Attraverso lo studio dei paesaggi post-industriali e delle strategie di progetto ecologico, la tesi propone un metodo basato su sei livelli di azione: nutrire la vegetazione, consolidare i percorsi esistenti, conservare la topografia attraverso una bonifica dolce, preservare le rovine industriali come elementi narrativi, riconnettere il sistema idrico e infine rivitalizzare la colmata di cemento trasformandola in suolo vivo. Il progetto restituisce l’immagine di un paesaggio in evoluzione, un paesaggio che cresce invece di essere costruito, dove tempo, vegetazione e memoria diventano strumenti di trasformazione. L’intervento non chiude la ferita, ma le permette di restare aperta, trasformando la fragilità in struttura e l’incompletezza nel fondamento di una nuova identità.
