This thesis addresses a gap in family business and strategic management regarding the ontological ambiguity between the knowledge-based view and the competence-based view, especially within the family firm context. Through a bibliometric–systematic review of family‐firm research, it identifies five recurring mechanisms and integrates them into an architecture. This explains both successful transformation and common failure modes in converting individual know-about and know-how into collective, repeatable performance. Conceptually, the model links the knowledge-based view with the performance-focused logic of the competence-based view. Finally, the study proposes avenues for future research, emphasizing the need for operationalization and comparative testing beyond family firms, while also reflecting on the limitations of a theory-driven synthesis that now awaits empirical validation.

Abstract
This thesis addresses a gap in family business and strategic management regarding the ontological ambiguity between the knowledge-based view and the competence-based view, especially within the family firm context. Through a bibliometric–systematic review of family‐firm research, it identifies five recurring mechanisms and integrates them into an architecture. This explains both successful transformation and common failure modes in converting individual know-about and know-how into collective, repeatable performance. Conceptually, the model links the knowledge-based view with the performance-focused logic of the competence-based view. Finally, the study proposes avenues for future research, emphasizing the need for operationalization and comparative testing beyond family firms, while also reflecting on the limitations of a theory-driven synthesis that now awaits empirical validation.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
