This sphere is vividly documented in the magazine Case d’oggi, a publication devoted to the ordinary construction of the city. Urban planning directives, market pressures, the bourgeoisie’s need for representation, and typological standardization positioned the façade as the privileged domain of architectural design. This emphasis reveals the condominium’s tension and projection toward the street front, defining the façade as a space suspended between a collective urban reference and an impulse toward individuality. Owing to their number and recurrence, these buildings both construct and belong to the city, contributing to the definition of shared urban codes. Beyond examining their common matrices, the research investigates architectural language as a tool for urban coherence, proposing an interpretation of Milan as a “catalogue city,” arbitrarily composable and decomposable. The thesis concludes with a residential design project that constitutes the operative continuation of the research—a practical attempt to confront the themes previously discussed, focusing especially on the critical aspects of 1930s architecture: the relationship between front and rear elevations, interaction with public space, and the pervasive typological standardization.

Abstract
In the 1930s, Milan underwent an unprecedented urban transformation, relying on the apartment building as the almost exclusive typology for residential development. Alongside this process, a shared exploration emerged concerning the architectural languages capable of representing Milan’s transformation into a metropolitan city. Designers questioned how to reconcile the inevitable drive and aspiration toward modernity with a figurative continuity with tradition. This research focuses on the buildings produced by professionals who are largely unknown today—pragmatic figures, fully aligned with the speculative logic of the real-estate market, whose work, by sheer quantity, constitutes the actual fabric of the city. The thesis concludes with a residential design project that constitutes the operative continuation of the research—a practical attempt to confront the themes previously discussed, focusing especially on the critical aspects of 1930s architecture: the relationship between front and rear elevations, interaction with public space, and the pervasive typological standardization.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
