This thesis focuses on the implementation of a Warehouse Management System (WMS) for a small Italian third-party logistics (3PL) company. Although WMS solutions are now fundamental tools used by most logistics companies, both academic literature and industrial practice provide limited guidance capable of supporting small firms in the selection and adoption of such systems. The study therefore proposes a structured analysis process aimed at guiding small-sized companies in the selection and implementation of a WMS. The approach consists of five distinct phases: an analysis of the company and its processes, the definition of requirements and functionalities, a market analysis aimed at identifying a limited number of candidate solutions, a make-or-buy evaluation, and finally the system implementation based on the selected alternative between in-house software development and outsourcing to a specialized provider. In the case study examined, the make alternative was selected, leading to the internal development of the system. The proposed process is based on the use of analysis tools widely recognized in both academic and industrial contexts, chosen for their effectiveness and ease of application. This reduces subjectivity in decision-making and makes the approach applicable even in environments characterized by limited resources. The outcome of this work is a replicable operational model demonstrating how the adoption of a WMS can represent an effective decision-support tool and an enabling factor for improving efficiency and operational management in small 3PL companies.
Il presente lavoro di tesi si concentra sull’implementazione di un sistema di gestione del magazzino (Warehouse Management System, WMS) per una piccola azienda italiana di logistica conto terzi (3PL). Sebbene i WMS siano oggi strumenti fondamentali utilizzati all’interno della maggior parte delle aziende logistiche, la letteratura e la pratica industriale offrono indicazioni limitate che siano in grado di guidare le piccole aziende nella scelta e nell’adozione di tali sistemi. L’elaborato propone quindi un processo di analisi strutturato, finalizzato a guidare le aziende di piccole dimensioni nella selezione e nell’implementazione di un WMS. L’approccio si articola in cinque fasi distinte: un’analisi dell’azienda e dei suoi processi, la definizione dei requisiti e delle funzionalità, un’analisi di mercato volta a selezionare un ristretto numero di soluzioni candidate, una valutazione make-or-buy e, infine, l’implementazione del sistema sulla base dell’alternativa selezionata tra lo sviluppo interno del software e l’affidamento ad un’azienda specializzata. Nel caso in analisi è stata selezionata l’alternativa make, effettuando quindi uno sviluppo interno del sistema. Il processo proposto si basa sull’impiego di strumenti di analisi ampiamente riconosciuti in ambito accademico e industriale, scelti per la loro efficacia e semplicità applicativa. Ciò consente di ridurre la soggettività nelle decisioni e di rendere l’approccio applicabile anche in contesti caratterizzati da risorse limitate. Il risultato del lavoro è un modello operativo replicabile, che dimostra come l’adozione di un WMS possa rappresentare un valido supporto decisionale e un fattore abilitante per il miglioramento dell’efficienza e della gestione operativa nelle piccole aziende 3PL.
