This thesis investigates the fluid-dynamic behavior of a centrifugal compressor operating with supercritical CO2 under reduced mass flow rate conditions, with particular emphasis on operation close to the thermodynamic critical point. The objective is to assess how near-critical operating conditions affect compressor rangeability on the left side of the characteristic curve and to determine whether critical point proximity amplifies internal instabilities and modifies the stall limit. A detailed CFD analysis is conducted using steady RANS and unsteady URANS simulations for two thermodynamic states: a near-critical case and a far-critical case. A barotropic model is adopted to account for significant variations in density and speed of sound, including the effects of CO2 phase change. The unsteady flow field is characterized through 84 pressure probes distributed along the diffuser circumference, enabling spectral and circumferential modal analyses of pressure fluctuations. Results demonstrate a marked sensitivity of compressor stability to critical point operation. In the near-critical case, phase change at the impeller leading edge induces asymmetric shock structures and modifies mass flow redistribution within the blade passages. Moreover, a fully developed deep rotating stall emerges in the diffuser, characterized by a single dominant stall cell rotating faster than the impeller. This unsteady structure significantly increases pressure oscillation amplitudes and reduces the left-hand boundary of the characteristic curve. In contrast, the far-critical case does not exhibit a coherent deep-stall regime within the investigated operating range. Pressure fluctuations remain lower in amplitude and spatially less organized, and no stable rotating stall cell can be clearly identified. The absence of phase change and weaker non-ideal gas effects contribute to a more stable off design behavior.

Abstract
The absence of phase change and weaker non-ideal gas effects contribute to a more stable off design behavior.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
