Throughout the last century, the theme of the minimum dwelling has been one of the most fertile fields of architectural experimentation, reflecting in a condensed form the social, economic, and environmental transformations of our time. The thesis explores the evolution of this housing model — from the "existenzminimum" of the Modern Movement to contemporary tiny houses — highlighting how the concept of essential space has, over time, become the expression of different visions: from necessity to choice, from function to ethics, from standardization to sustainability. Through a critical and design-oriented path articulated in multiple phases, the research analyzes emblematic case studies, recent regulations such as the 2024 Decreto Salva Casa, and new trends in urban living, identifying contemporary micro-spaces as a laboratory for rethinking the quality of domestic life. The thesis also investigates innovative spatial distribution solutions — such as the “island-based” organization of furnishings — and perceptual strategies capable of expanding the perception of space, enhancing elements such as light and mirrors. The aim is to demonstrate how the minimum dwelling, from being a simple response to economic or emergency constraints, can today become a manifesto of design, environmental, and cultural awareness: a new way of living, where “less” becomes a tool for living better and more sustainably.

Abstract
The aim is to demonstrate how the minimum dwelling, from being a simple response to economic or emergency constraints, can today become a manifesto of design, environmental, and cultural awareness: a new way of living, where “less” becomes a tool for living better and more sustainably.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
