Abstract

Liquid metal heat pipes are currently being investigated worldwide as primary cooling system for two new classes of nuclear reactors: small modular reactors and micro modular reactors. In this context, the adoption of additive manufacturing technologies for producing heat pipes opens new design possibilities. In this study, a numerical model to aid the design optimization process was developed with the the finite element analysis software COMSOL Multiphysics. The scope of the research consists of understanding how a variation in the main heat pipe parameters impacts the overall heat pipe performance. Two types of heat pipes were investigated: homogeneous porous wicked and composite wicked with porous medium and annular liquid gap. The model was validated with the mesh independence test and by comparing its results to experimental results taken both from scientific literature and from experiments performed at the research institute where this thesis was written; the result is that the accuracy of the model was proven to be within engineering margins. Several sensitivity analysis on key heat pipe parameters were performed. It was therefore concluded that the parameter that has the biggest impact on the heat pipe equivalent thermal resistance is the vapor channel diameter. An increase in the vapor channel diameter was obtained by reducing the wall and the porous wick radial thicknesses. Porosity and permeability of the wick showed only a minor impact on steady state performance but had a strong influence on the capillary limit; a high value of permeability by effective pore radius ratio is needed to achieve a high maximum transferrable thermal power. The capillary limit was also positively impacted by a significant margin with the adoption of the composite wick. Moreover, the results of this master thesis highlight the fact that a numerical model is an effective and relatively simple tool to perform preliminary heat pipe design operations.
