This research thesis aims to investigate how a person with visual impairments can experience an immersive journey on board a yacht, within a context in which, to date, support systems dedicated to such disabilities in the nautical sector remain underdeveloped. The research focuses on sensory design, understood as a design approach aimed at engaging all the senses in order to create an immersive and inclusive spatial experience. The objective of the project is the development of a system that enables blind and visually impaired individuals to orient themselves and experience the environment autonomously, through the activation and enhancement of the other senses. Too often, in the design of environments and spaces, the needs of blind individuals are overlooked, limiting the possibility of fully accessible experiences. Based on an internship experience at Azimut | Benetti, a reflection emerged on how the design of interior spaces can be approached when the client is a blind person, highlighting the current critical issues related to accessibility and inclusivity within the nautical sector. For this reason, the thesis project consists of the design of a yacht conceived for an owner with visual impairments, developed to allow autonomous and complete use of the main spaces on board, without the need for assistance. The results demonstrate how a universal design language can make space accessible to both sighted and non-sighted individuals, without compromising design and without diminishing the value of the experience for sighted users, but rather enhancing it. This leads to an innovative design model that is potentially applicable to other vessels as well.
