The fashion industry faces significant sustainability challenges due to high production volumes, resource-intensive processes, and wasteful consumption patterns. Digital platforms have emerged as potential enablers of circular economy principles, facilitating sustainable practices such as resale, rental, repair, and responsible sourcing. However, existing research remains fragmented, focusing on specific platform activities without comprehensively examining the diverse landscape of digital fashion platforms, their multidimensional sustainability contributions, or the factors influencing consumer adoption. This thesis addresses these gaps by reviewing existing literature and systematically analyzing 84 digital fashion platforms. Through cluster analysis, it identifies six distinct platform archetypes that operate across different stages of consumption (pre- purchase, use, and post-use), each reflecting a different approach to advancing sustainability within the fashion industry. These archetypes include Information, Search, and Insight Platforms; Resale Marketplaces; Sustainable First-Hand Marketplaces; Sourcing and Supply Chain Platforms; Rental; and Fashion Services Platforms. The findings provide strategic implications for platform managers, including opportunities for benchmarking, revenue diversification, feature development, and technological enhancement of governance mechanisms. For entrepreneurs, the research reveals market opportunities in underserved geographic regions, unexplored sustainability dimensions focusing on social and economic value, and platform configurations addressing production process efficiency. This thesis contributes to both academic understanding and practical guidance for developing digital platforms that advance environmental, social, and economic sustainability in the fashion industry.
L'industria della moda affronta sfide significative in termini di sostenibilità a causa di volumi di produzione elevati, processi ad alta intensità di risorse e modelli di consumo dispendiosi. Le piattaforme digitali sono emerse come potenziali abilitatori dei principi dell'economia circolare, facilitando pratiche sostenibili come la rivendita, il noleggio, la riparazione e l'approvvigionamento responsabile. Tuttavia, la ricerca esistente rimane frammentata, concentrandosi su specifiche attività di piattaforma senza esaminare in modo completo il diversificato panorama delle piattaforme digitali della moda, i loro contributi multidimensionali alla sostenibilità o i fattori che influenzano l'adozione da parte dei consumatori. Questa tesi affronta queste lacune attraverso una revisione della letteratura e un'analisi sistematica di 84 piattaforme digitali della moda. Attraverso l'analisi dei cluster, lo studio identifica sei archetipi distinti di piattaforme che operano attraverso le fasi di consumo pre-acquisto, utilizzo e post-utilizzo, ciascuno riflettendo un approccio diverso al avanzamento della sostenibilità nell'industria della moda.
