Abstract: Driven by the energy transition and the rise of non-programmable renewables, the Italian electricity system requires unprecedented flexibility, radically altering the dynamics of programmable generation. This thesis investigates the evolving market strategies of core units as fossil gas, coal, hydroelectric plants, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across the Day-Ahead, Intraday, and Ancillary Services markets from 2017 to 2025. By processing an extensive dataset of hourly market transactions, a robust computational pipeline was developed. A key methodological contribution of this work is the mathematical distinction between Net Physical Energy and Gross Commercial Volume. Normalizing these metrics into Equivalent Operating Hours (EOH) successfully isolates the actual physical dispatch from purely financial trading and arbitrage activities. The multi-year analysis reveals a structural shift in bidding behaviors, with thermal plants moving from bulk energy provision toward flexibility services. The study quantifies the marginalization of legacy carbon-intensive assets and the ascending role of energy storage, providing data-driven insights into the economic viability of flexibility providers within a decarbonizing grid.
