This research begins by examining the relevance of water heritage systems to contemporary society in the context of climate change and ongoing modernization. Traditional hydraulic infrastructures represent historical responses to environmental constraints, yet many are currently experiencing functional decline and spatial marginalization. Taking the Turpan karez system as a case study, the study analyzes the challenges it faces under modern transformation, focusing on the causes and manifestations of its deterioration. Through field investigation, data collection, and multi-scalar spatial analysis, the research identifies structural, environmental, and socio-economic factors contributing to the weakening of the system’s original functions and its disconnection from present-day urban and rural contexts. Based on this analysis, the study proposes spatial intervention strategies and implementable conservation approaches aimed at stabilizing the system, improving its environmental performance, and reintegrating it into contemporary spatial structures. Rather than treating the karez solely as an object of preservation, the research explores possibilities for adaptive use that respond to current needs while respecting its historical framework. The research adopts a progressive and low-impact methodology and seeks to provide practical references for the conservation and activation of water heritage systems under modern conditions.

Abstract
The research adopts a progressive and low-impact methodology and seeks to provide practical references for the conservation and activation of water heritage systems under modern conditions.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |

Descrizione: This project frames the Karez system as a living cultural and ecological infrastructure embedded within the territorial landscape. It integrates water conservation, agricultural regeneration, and community participation through a multi-scalar spatial strategy. The proposal aims to establish a resilient human–water system adapted to arid environments.
