Abstract

The Battery Electric Vehicle usage has always been the vector of cutting edge technology used in everyday contexts with light duty vehicles. The same cannot be said regarding infrastructure development, that should follow the same path of vanguard as the vehicles are doing. Exploring novel recharging methods can be a new chapter in the implementation of said vehicles overcoming the difficulties that this practice can show. The Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer can be considered the next technological step to implement in order to reset the so called "range anxiety" and boost the usage of EVs even for long trips, even longer than the ones promised by the manufacturer. This thesis work aims to analyze the feasibility of said recharging system in a highway environment in Italy, looking at the best solutions that the market could provides us with and analyzing the best parameters to apply in order to succeed in our assumptions. The system should not only maintain the State Of Charge in entrance on the vehicle but also recharge it giving it a higher amount of energy than the amount it consumes. The environment chosen is the A4 highway which is one of the most busy road infrastructures in Italy. The first chapter deals with the description of the literature that was at the forefront of this research building the basis of knowledge guiding the decisions and the considerations. The second chapter talks about the environment in which this system would be implemented with its characteristics and also the driving simulation with a benchmark vehicle on that same road stretch. Then the following chapter will be focused on sizing and designing the recharging system with predetermined parameters imposed to keep the infrastructure as realistic as possible, in order to give a genuine sight at the whole working composition. At the end we will analyze and discuss the obtained results to see if they are acceptable for our final goal and how they impact the vehicle's trip with respect of the scenario in which the system is not implemented. The use of this kind of recharging system can be the turning point of how we perceive the usage of EVs as we know it today, leading us to an environment in which the recharging procedure is not a driver's responsibility anymore but could be completely automatized and out of user care.
