In recent decades, gender-based violence has been increasingly redefined and examined with greater sensitivity and academic rigor. Despite the emergence of new terminology and expanded research, the root causes of this pervasive global issue remain complex and difficult to pinpoint. Although its manifestations may vary by country, violence against women persists across all social, economic, and geographic contexts. Mexico, and particularly the municipality of Ecatepec in the State of Mexico, continues to experience alarmingly high rates of gender-based violence. This thesis seeks to explore the urban conditions that have contributed to Ecatepec’s reputation as a “dangerous city for women.”The study is structured into seven chapters, with each chapter exploring a distinct theme and its impact on the social and gender spectrum. Through the compilation and analysis of maps, academic articles, data interpretation and comparison, as well as interviews with sociologists, psychologists, local residents, and women, alongside site visits—all approached through a gender-sensitive lens—this research constructs an urban atlas that identifies spatial and systemic patterns associated with gender-based violence. While the findings do not claim to be absolute, the study suggests that the rapid, unplanned expansion of Ecatepec has significantly shaped its social dynamics, reinforcing a cycle of violence that originates within the urban and institutional system itself and ultimately affects its residents. The thesis concludes with 6 strategies and a proposed masterplan, outlining key urban interventions aimed at enhancing community engagement, improving social interaction, creating connectivity solutions, and promoting the safety and well-being of women.

Abstract
The thesis concludes with 6 strategies and a proposed masterplan, outlining key urban interventions aimed at enhancing community engagement, improving social interaction, creating connectivity solutions, and promoting the safety and well-being of women.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
